Mixed Lighting
This is my mix lighting photo. The subject is my friend Meghan. The lighting in this photo is the ambient lighting of an overcast day, combined with Meghan's phone light. I had a lot of trouble getting the light to show up in the photo. Meghan had to hold the phone just barely out of frame, right up to her face. I wanted the photo to feel unnatural, to compliment the weird lighting. The photo was taken while I was directing Meghan on where to put her phone, and while she was happy, she was also confused on what she was meant to do -- a very contradicting set of emotions. I also took the photo from Meghan's left side, while photos that place the subject on the left side are normally taken from the right -- positioning the lines of the brick to lead the viewer to the subject. This photo does the opposite, which I like because it makes me feel like the subject doesn't want attention. That, and the light source emphasizes how uncomfortable the subject feels. The photo is clearly taken outside -- the brick wall, the thick fur coat -- and yet one light source is below the subject. I think it adds to the happy-yet-nervous feeling the subject portrays, as the light gives the subject more interesting lighting, but isn't natural.
